Why convert a PDF to Word at all

What actually happens during the conversion
This isn't a rename, and it isn't a screenshot pasted into a Word file. A PDF has no concept of paragraphs — it has thousands of positioned glyphs. The converter reads the coordinates of every text run, works out which pieces belong to the same line, which lines form a paragraph, and where column and table boundaries fall. It then writes those reconstructed structures out as real Word elements.
That's why the result is genuinely editable: when you add a word to a sentence, the rest of the paragraph reflows the way it should, instead of everything sitting in a fixed text box.
When the conversion won't be perfect
Worth being straight about this, because no converter gets every PDF right:
- Scanned documents and photos of paper contain no text at all, only an image of text. Conversion gives you a Word file with a picture in it. Making those editable needs OCR, which is a different process.
- Heavy multi-column magazine layouts with text wrapping around shapes can come out with the reading order shuffled.
- Unusual embedded fonts may be substituted if your computer doesn't have them, which shifts spacing slightly.
For ordinary documents — resumes, letters, reports, forms, contracts — the output is usually close enough to edit directly.
