Why most redaction leaks
The standard approach — draw a black rectangle over the sensitive line — fails,
and fails in the most embarrassing way possible. A rectangle is a shape added on
top of the page. The text is still underneath it, in the file. Select the area
and copy it, or run any text extractor, and the "redacted" words come out
perfectly. Court filings, corporate disclosures and government documents have
all been published this way.
What DesiDocs does instead
Type the text you want gone. DesiDocs finds every occurrence, then **deletes the
underlying content** inside each match before drawing the cover. The words are
removed from the file, not hidden in it. Select the black area afterwards and
there is nothing to copy, because there is nothing there.
You can also draw redaction boxes directly on the page for anything that is not
a searchable string — a photograph, a signature, a handwritten note — and choose
whether the covered area appears as a solid block or a row of asterisks.
Practical notes
- Matching is case-insensitive, so you do not have to reproduce the
document's capitalisation.
- Every page is searched. An account number that appears in a header on all
fourteen pages is removed fourteen times, in one pass. This is the most common
redaction failure after the black-rectangle mistake — catching the first
occurrence and missing the rest.
- Type the string exactly as it appears otherwise. A number written with
spaces in the document will not match the same number typed without them.
Check the document and copy the formatting.
Scans cannot be redacted this way
A scanned page is a photograph of text. There are no characters to search for
and none to delete, and DesiDocs has no OCR. For a scan, draw boxes over the
areas manually — that genuinely removes the image content underneath, so it is
sound, it is just not automatic.

Frequently asked questions
Is the text really gone, or just hidden?
Really gone. DesiDocs deletes the underlying content inside each match, so the words cannot be recovered by selecting, copying or extracting text. Drawing a black box in most editors leaves the text sitting underneath, which is how redactions usually leak.
How do I redact my Aadhaar or account number?
Type the number exactly as it appears in the document and click Redact. Every occurrence across every page is found and removed in one pass.
Does it work on a scanned PDF?
No — a scan is an image with no searchable text, so there is nothing to match. Scanned documents need OCR first.
Is matching case-sensitive?
No. Redacting "aadhaar" also catches "AADHAAR" and "Aadhaar".
