Editing a document you only have as a PDF
Somebody sends a PDF and asks for changes. You do not have the original file,
and retyping four pages to alter two sentences is absurd. Converting to Word

What the conversion reconstructs

Expect a good approximation, not a byte-perfect twin
This is the part worth setting expectations on, because no converter on the
market gets it perfect and the reason is structural. A PDF does not record that
something is a heading, a caption or a two-column layout. It records glyphs at
coordinates. Rebuilding the intent means inferring it, and inference is
imperfect.
What that means in practice:
- Simple documents convert very well — letters, applications, reports,
articles, anything mostly linear text.
- Complex layouts drift. Multi-column pages, magazine-style designs, heavy
use of text boxes and precisely placed labels may need tidying.
- Tables usually survive as editable tables, but merged cells and nested
tables can come out flattened.
- Fonts substitute if the PDF's fonts are not on your machine, which shifts
line breaks slightly.
Check the result before sending it on. For text edits this is a large time
saving; for a pixel-exact copy of a designed page, it is the wrong approach.
Scans will not convert
If your PDF is a photograph or a scan, there is no text to extract. DesiDocs has
no OCR, so a scan produces a Word file containing the page image rather than
editable words. Test it in one second: if you cannot select the text in a PDF
viewer, this conversion has nothing to work with.
