Editing a PDF is not like editing a document
A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores instructions for painting glyphs at
fixed coordinates, which is why text does not reflow when you change it and why
most "PDF editors" either rasterise the page or refuse. DesiDocs reads the real
text layer out of each page — line-level bounding boxes, font sizes and colours
— so when you click a line you are editing that line, and what you type is
placed back with the original size and colour rather than pasted over the top in
a default font.
What you can change
- Existing text. Click any line to select it and retype it. The surrounding
layout does not move, because in a PDF it cannot.
- New text anywhere. Drop a text box on any page, at any size.
- Images. Place a JPG or PNG — a photo, a stamp, a scanned letterhead.
- Shapes and freehand drawing. Boxes, lines and pen strokes, for marking up
a drawing or striking something through.
- Page order. Reorder, rotate or drop pages before you export.
Where it will fight you
If your PDF is a photograph or a scan, there is no text layer to edit. Every
word is pixels, and DesiDocs has no OCR, so you can draw and add new text on top
of the scan but you cannot click an existing word and change it. You can tell
which kind you have in a second: if you can select text with your cursor in any
PDF viewer, the text layer exists.
Heavily designed files — magazine layouts, certificates with text baked into a
background image, forms flattened by another tool — will edit unevenly for the
same reason. Simple documents built from text (letters, applications, reports,
invoices) behave best.
Limits and privacy
One file at a time, up to 25 MB. Your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted
connection, edited on our servers, and deleted within 30 minutes by an
automated storage rule. There is no account, no watermark on the output, and no
cap on how many files you edit in a day.
