Marking a document so a copy of it is traceable
A watermark does not stop anyone copying a file. What it does is make the copy
obviously a copy, and tie it to a purpose — which is why "Submitted to XYZ Bank
for KYC, 12 March" written across an ID scan is genuinely useful protection.
Someone who lifts that image cannot reuse it anywhere else without the sentence
that says where it came from.
Text or an image
Type a line of text, draw one, or upload an image such as a company stamp or
logo. Then set the size, the angle, the opacity and the position, and it is
stamped across every page.
The choices that matter:
- Diagonal and large is hardest to crop out, because cutting it away also
cuts into the content. This is the right setting for an ID or a document you
are sending to a third party.
- A small corner mark is easy to crop off, so use it where you want
attribution rather than protection — a logo on an internal report.
- Opacity around 30–50% stays readable over the text without hiding it.
Fully opaque hides content; too faint disappears when the page is printed.
Watermarking an Aadhaar or PAN copy before you share it
Write who you are sending it to and why, diagonally, at moderate opacity. If the
document also contains a number you would rather not share at all, a watermark
is the wrong tool — it sits on top and the number underneath is still selectable
and copyable. Redact PDF deletes the text out of the file
instead.
Limits and privacy
