Why the PDF is big in the first place
Almost always: photographs. A page of text is a few kilobytes of instructions; a
phone photo of that same page is several megabytes of pixels, and a PDF made
from phone photos is those photos in a wrapper. This is why "compress" so often
means "make the images smaller", and why a text-only PDF barely shrinks at all —
there is nothing bulky in it to remove.
Three levels, and what each one does
DesiDocs recompresses the embedded images and leaves text and vector graphics
completely untouched, so the words stay sharp at every level.
- Medium — images capped at 1500px on the long edge, JPEG quality 75. The
page still looks right at full screen. Start here.
- High — 1000px, quality 60. Visibly softer if you zoom into a photo, fine
for a document that only needs to be readable.
- Extreme — 600px, JPEG 2000. For hitting a hard upload limit when nothing
else will. Photographs will look rough.
Images already small enough to be irrelevant — under 15 KB, or under 150px —
are skipped, because squeezing a 4 KB logo saves nothing and makes it ugly.
You see both numbers before you commit
Before and after sizes are shown honestly, including when the saving is
disappointing. If a file only drops 4%, it is because it was already mostly
text, and no tool will do better without degrading the words.
Two things it will refuse or spoil
Digitally signed PDFs are rejected outright. Any change to the bytes
invalidates a cryptographic signature, so compressing a signed document would
hand you a file whose signature no longer verifies. DesiDocs stops rather than
silently break it.
Scanned text is not text. A scan is a photograph of words; compressing it
compresses the photograph. Push the level too hard and the letters blur, because
there is no text layer to protect. Use Medium on scans.
Limits and privacy
